Summary: Chris has an accident filming “Finest Hours”. Zach rushes to his side. Everything changes.

When Zach gets to Stage 48, the crowd’s already rambunctious and clearly in a celebratory spirit. Meaning, ready for a party and not for a serious awards ceremony.

A row of five living mannequins with masks present themselves to the audience in black tuxedos. A second glance reveals that they are not following the dress code of the gala underneath their suits. Eye candy thinly disguised as a fashion show. Not that many people even pay attention to the guys; the guests tonight are more than interesting enough to capture everyone’s attention. Besides the prominent award winners, dozens of celebs are milling around the bars. While Zach starts shaking hands and he scans the crowd: Mary Lambert, Laverne Cox, David Burtka, Perez Hilton, Edie Windsor, Larry Kramer, Tyler Oakley, Hannah Hart, LuAnn de Lesseps, Tyler Glenn, Zachary Drucker, Barefoot Bubbly… It’s a colorful crowd to be sure – singers, actors, comedians, radio personalities, designers. Everyone is here.

Paul Bettany rescues him from too much small talk and not enough drinks, and drags him off to the nearest bar for a Moscow Mule in an authentic copper cup (“Fuck prosecco.”). Zach barely touches the vodka cocktail, but it still helps. The few pages with notes for his speech seem to burn a hole into his pocket. And he’s sure they weigh ten pounds. Or at least way more than mere paper is allowed to weigh on earth. He’s tense in a way he hasn’t been since the first press thing for Heroes, when he sweated blood and tears through every pore of his body.

His friends and acquaintances notice, of course, but thankfully they blame the fallout of his initial OUT 100 interview. Zach doesn’t bother to correct them. He’s arrogant enough to be convinced that he’s right. And even if he’s wrong, the topic is important – any conversation he can facilitate about HIV and Aids and PreP will be useful. Also, Peter and Matthew are counting on him. Even if it’s too late for Matthew.

But in spite of his convictions and his best intentions, tonight Zach couldn’t care less. His head is where his heart is. At home with Chris.

OUT opens the gala event with important words: They have gathered here tonight in order to celebrate the 100 most influential LGBT people of  2014 and the extraordinary contributions of the LGBT community to the cultural, social, and political life of America.

Zach tries not to wince. He’d been hoping for a brief ceremony and a big party. To get the interview over with as soon as possible and go home. Home to Chris. He finds himself staring at the purposefully promiscuous mannequins from Macy’s without even noticing their chiselled abs or prominent bulges. Home to Chris. He’d like to think that Miles would laugh at him now, but Zach knows that he wouldn’t, and that makes him feel even more frazzled.

Meanwhile, the host of the evening, Lea DeLaria, has taken over the stage, and thank fuck she makes it clear that she doesn’t intend to turn this into a mess according the old rite. “We’re here to celebrate, and celebrate we will!”

He can get on board with that.
