Okay, so I’ve finally seen “Star Trek Beyond”.
Spoilers ahead.
I was gratified to see no random sexist scenes. Kudos for that.
Also, with the help of two power cranes and one gravitational anomaly I’ve managed to suspend disbelief.
(Mostly.)
That said, Weta Workshop called. They want the set from the mines of Moria back.
Apart from that…
…not even Scotty gave a fuck that the Enterprise died??? Really???
…the one effective 3D scene was plagiarized from “Avatar”.
…why the fuck did the lone bad guy need to be a vampire on top of his male entitlement issues? (Also, he didn’t even sparkle.)
What about…
…science?
…fiction?
Also, my husband was simply bored by it all.
P.S.:
Thank fuck gay Sulu didn’t come across as artificial as I had feared. Nevertheless, a few words: If anyone gave a flying fuck about canon, Sulu would be bisexual, not gay. But of course we can’t go into such irrelevant details. Bi-erasure for the win. :-/
Also, just a few months ago Zachary Quinto went ballistic in an interview about how insulting it is to infer the sexual orientation of a character based on the sexual orientation of an actor. Which is precisely why George Takei asked that Sulu should not be portrayed as gay to honour him. The character has his own story. But of course if straight ppl mean well, they get to talk over the actor in question and there’s nothing wrong with that.
