Let’s just pretend it’s still Sunday…

I haven’t done Six Sentence Sunday in ages. But since I currently feel stuck in that place where I’m forever three chapters away from The End, I figured maybe it will help to share a snippet with y’all.

Plus, proof of life etc yadda yadda.

Summary: Chris has an accident filming “Finest Hours”. Zach rushes to his side. Everything changes.

Today of all days Zach makes it to the set without anyone sparing him a second glance, or so it seems. He can’t enjoy this surprising respite, though. And while he doesn’t actually do it, he certainly feels like glancing over his shoulder and sneaking suspicious looks left and right every other minute. And he fervently wishes he could have stayed home with Chris.

Zach channels his agitation and irritation and frustration into his role. He’s intense and unpleasant, and the morning flies by with barely any retakes necessary. At lunch Zach feels a lot better. He’s definitely managed to blow off some steam. In his trailer, after lunch, he’s faced with his iPhone again, and his fears return full force. He doesn’t even know what exactly he’s afraid of – he trusts Miles to keep his statement brief and professional, and what are the media going to do right there and then besides bombarding his publicist with questions.

And Chris…

Zach’s stomach twists. Chris has to deal with too much already, and he hates adding to the list. The hot, hearty lentil soup he forced himself to eat feels like ice cubes made of lead in his stomach.

When he finally puts his left index finger on the home button and the screen of his iPhone comes alive, the red square with the number of unread messages changes from twenty-nine to thirty-one in the blink of an eye. That can mean only one thing: Miles has been true to his word.

He reads the text from Chris first: “Why didn’t u wake me, fucker? Hope ur O.K. Don’t SLAP a pap – remmbr our secret weapon. Skunk will defend our honor & pee on all paps.” Zach can’t help laughing. Warmth spreads through his body, relief and love. His stomach settles down.

Next he pulls up the messages from his and Chris’ publicist and from his agent. They are short and reassuring. There’ve been the typical inquiries from the usual suspects, met with the customary “no further comment”.

Most messages are from friends who are worried about him and had no idea. No one asks questions about him and Chris. Not yet.
