Happy New Year!

For 2019,
I wish you and your loved ones, far and near,
healthhappiness, and good luck.
May you find the way you are looking for,
or at least: may your GPS never leave you stranded.
May the winds of fate
only make you stumble, but never bring you down on your knees.
May the sun shine warm upon your face and melt away all shadows –
but not your ice-cream.
May the rain start falling
(soft or cold, in a drizzle or a down-pour)
only after you’ve reached your destination.
May you find friends
in unexpected places, and meet them again
and again and again
in health and happiness.
And throughout the year,
every month,
every week,
every day,
every night,
every hour,
every minute,
every second,
I wish for you
that whatever you believe in
(be it the power of the divine or the power of reason,
philosophical ideals, small dreams or really big visions)
may be a blessing for you,
and guide you and guard you.

Until 2020.

Festive Wossname!

photo of a christmas tree ornament in form of a colourful cat

No matter what holidays or holy days you celebrate,
no matter if you feast under palm trees or icicles,
alone or with family or friends,
with noisy exultation or quiet introspection,
may your days be filled
with warmth and wonder,
with healing and happiness,
and much
joy.

And I hope you love

the cards

I did not send to you

because I donated the money instead…

…to the WWF to support the repopulation programme for lynx in Germany and…

…to “Ärzte ohne Grenzen”/”Doctors without Borders” to help children in need.

And what happened next?

I woke from a dream that was essentially an SF crime thriller. We were all living in a new colony on another planet, when an eccentric acquaintance of mine who became obsessed with some historical documents about my family that I had lying around seemingly committed suicide… I began to suspect it was murder and tied into something really big and awful. But no one wanted to hear about it. I managed to find his iPad and was hoping to discover some information about what he knew or what he thought he knew…

…and then I woke up. Damnit. Now I’ll never know why he was murdered.

Probably some government conspiracy or other. Maybe he found out the hopeful new colony was doomed from the start and the government knew that and did nothing. That would be so clichéd, though. And so unsurprising. I mean that’s what happens in the real world in the present all the time…

I am no longer the answer…

…to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything.

I had a very nice birthday on Tuesday and turned forty-three. There was cake, I took the day off work in order to be entirely useless and lazy, and in the evening we went out for some yummy Mexican comfort food.

Family members (even my mother!) and a few dear friends thought of me and called or sent me an e-mail or even an actual birthday card. That really meant a lot to me. Connection, keeping in touch and staying friends, is the greatest gift for me.

I do feel the middle age, and I’m weirdly out of sync. I remember moments of when I was five, ten, thirteen, fifteen, thirty like yesterday. I have moments when I miss people I have lost years ago as keenly as if it just happened. Time is fleeting, and the human mind is a wondrous wisdomball…

Apart from that, autumn is finally really here. After a night of wind and rustling leaves, a drizzle has set in. Now the world is damp and gray, with a muted bronze splash of colour from trees that seem to go from green to brown this year, skipping the more colourful hues autumn for now.

The cats, intrepid, and protected by lots of warm fur, still insist on their morning out on the balcony.

Five Things Friday

Ages and ages ago my online friend Sc0ffy started this meme on LJ. It‘s really simple. Talk about five things you‘re grateful for this week.

  1. Sunshine. We got lots of golden October sunshine this week, and I made sure to soak it up for a few minutes every day.
  2. Cats. ‘Nuff said.
  3. Being able to breathe. My allergies seem to be calming down without turning into serious asthma. *knock on wood* Breathing is seriously underrated. Until the moment you can’t do it properly anymore.
  4. Friends. Cutting ties with facebook and Instagram has forced me to realise that so and so many people whom I dearly wanted to count as friends don’t give a flying fuck if I live or die. However, I’ve also managed to stay in touch with a few dear friends. With my oldest online friend I’ve been friends for fourteen years now. She’s still around! And my best friend is, too. I’m grateful.
  5. Creature comforts. This week: coffee, chocolate, new and enormously fluffy winter bed covers, and reading a new book, “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hours-Bookstore”.

The hill you’re willing to die on…

Or: Why I like the “Daily Compass”.

The classic philosophy question asks what happens when an immovable object meets an irresistible force? The evidence of rock and water suggests that the irresistible force will win, but not on any time scale that you can comprehend. Sheer determination may lose in the end, but it should hold you for a couple of million years.

What are you determined to stick out, even if you will lose in the end?

So what is the hill I’m willing to die on?

I think like with many things in life you’ll only figure this answer out when you’re already on that hill and it’s clear the cavalry won’t be coming.

For myself, I do hope one of my hills would be human rights as laid down in the basic law that is the German constitution. One of my professors at law school said: “And if it should come to that (that those human rights are in peril), I will hang, and I hope, ladies and gentlemen, that you will be at my side.”

(He died in a drunk driving accident a few years later – being the drunk driver, unfortunately. But I still remember him as one of the most remarkable figures I came across at university.)

In terms of living the life of the silent, immovable object I’ve had sadly way too much experience since Trump and Brexit. When I realise an argument and a discussion won’t help, I simply say things like “I disagree.” or “I don’t share these views at all.” and variations thereof. Sometimes that has led to really fruitful conversations. At other times I could at least sleep better because I knew I hadn’t agreed.

Daily Compass Picked Up Again

Urgh, I just can’t do it every day. But I’m not giving up!

Here you go:

“You never know what’s around the corner. It could be everything. Or it could be nothing. You keep putting one foot in front of the other, and then one day you look back and you’ve climbed a mountain.”
― Tom Hiddleston

What have you looked back at and been surprised that you accomplished?

Honestly, every single week. Every book I translate, every story I write. This year, when I earned the achievement to get the legendary weapon Dragonwrath and the battle pet “Lil’ Tarecgosa” in World of Warcraft – which took several months of weekly challenges to accomplish.  Or getting my law degree. Or getting my degree in political sciences and history on top of that. I guess I’m impatient with the little things, but I can keep going for years when it’s big stuff.
