Day 11

In your own space, make a list of at least 3 things that you like about yourself. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I’ve been struggling with myself so much last year that this is really hard. Especially since the challenge is not supposed to be about something I perceive on an intellectual level as positive about myself, but something I really feel. Something I really actively like about myself at the moment.

(Can I say that what I like about myself are my friends, my cats, and my beanbag? No? *sigh*)

Fandom Snowflake Challenge, Day 10

Day 10

In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources and spaces. Tell us where you go to dig up canon facts for your fandom, or where you get all the juicy details about your favorite ship. Where do you like to hang out and squee like a squeeing thing? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

For all adult Star Trek and Star Trek RPF fans (no minors allowed, sorry) I want to recommend the Chatzy chatroom I run:

“The Pinto Bar”

The bar is slash-friendly and porn-friendly (in general, no NSFW warnings are required; I just expect people to be considerate if they share extremely kinky or otherwise disturbing content).

It’s a great place for hanging out and squee-ing and moaning over all things Star Trek and especially Star Trek RPF, but we’re also happy to hear from other fandoms or about original work. The bar is also a safe space to talk about difficult topics – no matter if you have personal, philosophical, or political issues on your mind.

I – and the staff members who help me with running the bar – do our best to keep my bar a comfortable and positive space for everyone. We’re taking privacy and safety concerns seriously, and try to have a member of the staff around most of the time. Two rules that I will always enforce are: no bashing (of anything and anyone) and no brawling.

We have a weekly gathering (jour fixe or “Stammtisch”) in the bar each Saturday at 10 pm UTC (→ convert UTC to your timezone). But some people are around at some point almost every day, just to chat or to do “writing sprints” (20 to 30 minutes of writing/working followed by the sharing of snippets and general cheering each other on).

We also do movie nights and porn nights and free-style RPG nights. We’ve hosted Big Bang brunches for the participants of the Pinto Big Bang, run a book club for “Captive Prince”, we have instigated several challenges on Tumblr, I really want to do a virtual writing retreat at some point this year, and we’re always open for suggestions!

Fandom Snowflake Challenge, Day 9

Day 09

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I have come across two articles about the topic of this Snowflake that I really, really recommend:

During the last weeks I’ve seen many articles trying to tackle the problem of New Year’s resolutions. If you should make any, why they don’t work, how they can work. (Basically, New Year’s resolutions are like diets. They don’t work.)

Last year I’ve read many articles about psychology and creativity. One thing I’ve come across a couple of times is that there’s apparently evidence backing up the idea that people who focus on the process instead of on the outcome are happier and also more successful.

That approach matches the article about self-compassionate practices and habits. So I’ve decided to apply that idea to New Year’s resolutions.

super easy super healthy whole grain scones

Instagram of a scone with chocolate glaze

Ingredients:

  • 6 tbsp rapeseed/canola oil
  • 240 ml buttermilk
  • 270 g whole grain flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • finely grated zest of 1/2 lemon

Instructions:

  1. preheat oven to 230°C/446°F
  2. mix oil and buttermilk
  3. mix the dry ingredients
  4. mix everything
  5. split dough in 6 or 12 scones and put them on a greased cookie sheet or in a muffin pan (6 end up more like proper big breakfast rolls, while 12 are maybe better if you make sweet scones as snacks)
  6. bake for ca. 15 minutes (depending on your oven) until they are nicely golden-brown

The scones are awesome still warm, and stored in freezer bags or tupperware they keep up to a week.

You can also easily adapt the recipe, it’s really versatile.

So far I’ve made savoury scones with 6 tbsp chia seeds and they were awesome. I’ve also made a couple of batches of sweet scones. For example I’ve added a few tablespoons of raw cocoa nibs and a bit of sugar, scraped a vanilla bean into the dough, or added a few teaspoons of gingerbread or coffee spice mixtures.

Enjoy!

Day 08

Comment to someone you haven’t ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you’ve interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of “I did it!”

I totally did that by filling various fandom stockings and a few wishes from Fandom Snowflake Challenge, Day 2.

But for me maybe the bigger challenge is that I’m trying to be back on Tumblr!

I had to leave for mental health reasons last May. I’m a bit better now, so I’m kind of trying to ease back into things. I’m not yet following anyone, but I’m posting for the Pinto bar again, and x-posting a few of my blog posts, and even reblogging a bit.

This is a big deal for me, a giant step forward. I feel very brave for taking it. My best friend remains very skeptical. So I guess this is your chance to prove her wrong that Tumblr is bad for me.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge, Day 7

Day 7

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay, I want to talk about a problematic fandom.

I’m not even sure if it’s one of my fandoms.

What I’m talking about is Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series, now an acclaimed TV show.

I read the first book in 1997, long before there was any serious fandom for this series. I read this book in very particular personal circumstances, which is certainly a part of why it’s burned into my memory like that. But at the time the reading experience was also unparalleled for me in its brutality, passion, sensuality, and nitty-gritty realism. I was shocked and blown away. I honestly can’t remember another reading experience that was this visceral for me.

The “Outlander” series ended up being one of the things I share with my husband (like “Lord of the Rings” or “Harry Potter” or “Lisbeth Salander”). At some point I even wrote a little gapfiller for Yuletide.

I’m first and foremost a fix-it ficcer, so that was why I was and was not in “Outlander” fandom – there wasn’t really anything to fix. I may not have liked all twists and turns of the story, but there was nothing that really called to me to write or art for. But I (and my husband) still followed the series passionately. The richness of historical detail, the juxtaposition of our time and the past, wrapped in a seemingly endless series of doorstopper novels… what’s not to love?

But then this happened.

Since then I continued  reading the series (mostly, at least – I still haven’t tackled the latest doorstopper because as an evil European I’m not really all that invested in the story of American independence), but my passion for the series was pretty much extinguished because the author was such a fucking asshole about fanfic.

When news got out about a TV show I was… “skeptical” is probably the politically correct term.

But because it’s one of the things my husband and I both really, really enjoyed reading, I ended up ordering the DVDs of the first season for Christmas after all.

And we were absolutely BLOWN away.

The actors are brilliant. The attention to detail and authenticity is fucking amazing. The way the show interprets and transforms canon is imaginative and creative and suitable. My concerns were very similar to my apprehension about “The Lord of the Rings” – I couldn’t imagine that anyone is capable of turning that into a movie, but Peter Jackson managed. And Ronald D. Moore and the cast and crew of the “Outlander” series managed, too. Holy hell.

But what does that mean for me as a fan?

To be honest, I don’t know.

Should anything in the series or TV show inspire me, could I get over the cruel and ignorant things the author said and wrote about fanfiction, even if she seems to have retracted some of her statements by now ?

Can I even call myself a “fan”at all, considering the circumstances?

To be perfectly honest, I don’t want to be the “fan” of someone who ever compared fanfiction to rape.

So here’s my dilemma: A series and a TV show I enjoy, a canon I deeply care about, but I don’t even want to be a fan of this canon, much less create for it.
