Yesterday was European Union Day.

flag of the European Union

Also known as Schuman Day, EU Day celebrates the historical declaration by French foreign minister Robert Schuman in 1950, which proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community… the first of a series of supranational European institutions that would ultimately become today’s “European Union”.

I haven’t seen a single post celebrating Europe – the unprecedented decades of peace and all the economic, humanitarian, and cultural benefits we have been allowed to enjoy thanks to the European Union.

And that’s pretty devastating.

5 ingredients, 15 minutes

ingredients:

  1. (whole grain) pasta,
  2. green asparagus,
  3. roasted pine nuts,
  4. garlic,
  5. parmesan cheese.

you also need: salt, pepper, olive oil, and a dash of lemon juice or white wine.

how-to:

  1. roast pine nuts without burning them (on a nine-scale stove, I use 8 and it takes about 3 minutes. do not wanter away for this. really. just don’t.)
  2. when the pasta is in the pot (I’m assuming 10 minutes pasta), put a bit of olive oil in a frying pan and add the asparagus (on a nine-scale stove, I use 6). keep tossing it gently for 5 minutes.
  3. season to taste with sea salt & freshly ground black pepper, add a dash of lemon juice and/or white wine.
  4. add thinly sliced garlic (I use three cloves b/c I believe in the blessed power of three). keep gently stirring for another 4 minutes.
  5. for the last minute, add the roasted pine nuts.

Serve in a decorative heap on top of the pasta sprinkled generously with freshly grated parmesan cheese.

(If you want it even fancier, you can fry up some salmon or king prawns in a separate pan.)

What is lost is lost forever.

Pro EU poster by the artist Wolfgang Tillmans, with the message: What is lost is lost forever. Say you’re in if you’re in. This one’s important: If the UK leaves Europea it may spell the end of the largest peace project in human history. It’s not about ‘same old’ but about pulling through together. Register to vote before June 07.

For 60 years the European Union has been
the foundation of peace
between European neighbours,

after centuries of bloodshed.

Om nom nom.

Indian lemon soup.

Salad: baby spinach and lamb’s lettuce, onion, avocado, goat cheese, roasted pine nuts, and a vinaigrette with macadamia oil and aceto balsamico bianco.

Fresh ciabatta with olives, homemade aioli, guacamole, and baba ganoush.

(And a sadly rather unremarkable Australian Shiraz. Alas, can’t have everything.)

Birdsong

(After getting up for no fucking reason way before dawn.)

a picture of birds swirling above the horizon at dawn

(Picture credits: Creative Commons Share Alike/Attribution Susanne Nilsson “Flying at Dawn”)

birdsong
the slam poetry of morning
the gory glory of worm and moth
the sacred responsibility of nesting
and that one moment before dawn,
when the sun and the moon and the stars share the same sky
with birds of blood and feather and hollow bone,
when sun and song and darkness become one,
when lightness infuses our earthbound skeletons
to open our minds and lift our hearts
to poetry, to prayer, and
birdsong

Okay, so.

People, if someone tells you that you hurt them.

Do NOT say “but I didn’t intend to hurt you”.

If you’re a 5 year-old “I didn’t mean to make them cry” is maybe still valid. MAYBE. But if you’re an adult, and a friend tells you that you hurt them, it’s NOT.

WHICH MATURE ADULT ACTUALLY INTENDS TO HURT THEIR FRIENDS???
